AGRISTATIS RESEARCH STUDIES IN 2021
01/12/2021
During 2021, AgriStatis conducted a series of global surveys covering 23 regions (except for the temporarily occupied territories of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, and a part of temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions).

Such research studies are very important for all participants of the agro-industrial sector, since based on the data obtained from a study of agronomists and farm directors, producers of seed and CPP get a valuable information and can use it further to build a strategy for harmonious company development.

How much? Why? When? Under what circumstances? What characteristics? These are the questions that analysts face during every marketing period, and it is the data of such large-scale studies that allow not only to get acquainted with market trends, but also answer such important business questions in a detailed analysis.

Almost 1,000 farms cultivating sunflower on the area over 10 hectares participated in the study on seed and crop protection products.

Seed purchase
Despite having funds in their accounts, farms want to order and buy exactly those sunflower hybrids that they have chosen, and not those that remain available in March-April. Therefore, farms order sunflower seeds in advance and the peak of orders is in December. As of March 2021, according to the study, sunflower hybrids were ordered for 90% of the sown area. However, some agronomists still indicated that they had faced some problems when buying hybrids, namely, the absence or insufficient quantity of the selected hybrid at the time of purchase from the supplier as well as problems with delivery.

When choosing seeds, agronomists select hybrids based on the following factors: yield, growing experience, resistance to drought and broomrape, oil content and price.

Foreign VS domestic selection
According to the study, 277 hybrids and 7 varieties of sunflower from more than 45 seed producers were sown in 2021. The share of area under sunflower of foreign selection was over 90%. A similar situation was with maize, where the share of hybrids of foreign selection was sown on more than 80% of the total area under maize.

Leaders among producers of sunflower seeds are such companies like Limagrain, Pioneer, Syngenta (listed in alphabetical order). More than 75% of the total area under sunflower was sown by hybrids of these producers.

This season, seed producers have been actively promoting their products and offering a variety of promotions and vouchers for discounts, i.e., when buying a certain amount of seed units, producers provided free additional sunflower seed units; some producers also provided discounts for ordered volume of products and discounts for pre-orders. Corporations that produce both seed and crop protection products have offered interesting offers this year for discounts on crop protection products when buying seed.

Systems for sunflower cultivation
In 2021, we see a situation when hybrids for Clearfield®, Clearfield® Plus, ExpressSun® and tribenuron-methyl-tolerant systems take more than 50% of the sown area. If the companies used to have a portfolio that consisted of hybrids of one particular system, now when analyzing the portfolio of companies in the TOP-10 by sown area this season, we see that all 10 companies have hybrids resistant to both tribenuron-methyl and imazamox and imazopyr. This is caused by a system convenience and efficiency, as well as a wide choice of both hybrids and CPP for it.
Crop protection products
After analyzing the period of orders for crop protection products, it can be affirmed that agronomists are in no hurry to buy products in advance, as in the case of seed; but usually by the beginning of the season farms already have most of the necessary products in stock.

The peak of orders for crop protection products is in February, but by March 2021 about 40% of surveyed agronomists have not yet purchased crop protection products for sunflower.
