RESEARCH ON SELECTION OF WINTER OSR SEEDS FOR THE HARVEST IN 2021
01/04/2021
The first research study of AgriStatis in 2021 was the research on selection of winter OSR by farms in Ukraine. 357 agronomists and farm directors participated in the study with the area under OSR over 10 hectares. The study covered 23 regions (except Zakarpattia region, temporarily occupied territories of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, and a part of temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions).

Results of such research studies are very important for all participants of the agro-industrial sector, since based on the data obtained from a study of agronomists and farm directors, seed producers get a valuable information and can use it further to build a strategy for harmonious company development while and agricultural producers get acquainted with trends and innovations in the agricultural sector.

Statistic data on area under OSR
It is interesting that according to the data of State Statistics Service of Ukraine, the sown area under OSR was 999.1 thousand ha (area under OSR for farms) in season 2020-2021, while according to the Information and analytical agency "APK-Inform" winter OSR had been sown on 881.1 thousand ha. To calculate the study on seeds of winter OSR, the area provided by Information and analytical agency "APK-Inform" was used, excluding the area under OSR, less than 10 ha, since according to experts (Kleffmann Digital RS), this area is closer to real values.
Leaders among seed producers
Based on study results, 147 hybrids and varieties of winter OSR from 26 seed producers have been sown in the season 2020-2021. The leaders in seed production are NPZ-Lembke, DSV and Bayer CS (Dekalb® brand). Hybrids of these producers were sown on a little over 50% of the total sown area under OSR, i.e., every second hectare.

There is a tendency on reduction in the number of varieties and, accordingly, increased number of hybrids. This season, only 13 varieties were sown on an area of 74 thousand hectares. The undisputed leader within the line of varieties is the Black Giant variety from the Institute of Feed Research & Agriculture of Podillya NAAS.

The line of hybrid seeds was presented by a wide range of 134 hybrids which were sown on the area of 790 thousand hectares. The widest portfolio of hybrids was provided by Bayer CS (Dekalb® brand) – 20 hybrids, NPZ-Lembke and DSV offered 17 hybrids each in their portfolio. The leaders among hybrids by sown area are such hybrids as Sherpa and Mercedes from NPZ-Lembke and Dalton hybrid from DSV.
Clearfield® Hybrids
Almost 16% of the sown area was sown with Clearfield® hybrids.
Interestingly, 34% of sown area on the South was sown with Clearfield® hybrids, while in the Western region, which is the largest region according to sowing areas, only 1% of the total area was sown with Clearfield® hybrids. That is, agronomists in the Western region prefer conventional hybrids. Clearfield® hybrids produced by DSV, Bayer CS (Dekalb® brand) and Corteva Agriscience (Brevant ™ seeds brand) are the undisputed leaders in this segment with a share of over 80%. On average, agronomists paid 191 USD incl. VAT per 1 sowing unit of Clearfield® winter OSR (1.5 million seeds), and around 149 USD incl. VAT per 1 sowing unit of a conventional hybrid.

Seed producers this season have been actively promoting their products and offered a variety of promotions, namely: when buying a certain number of seed units, producers provided additional OSR units free of charge; some producers also offered free bags of maize and sunflower seeds; a significant discount was provided on products for the treatment of winter OSR; they also offered crop insurance and access to crop monitoring.
